IS JESUS CHRIST GOD: Just like in many other portions in Matthew, Mark, Luke and John (what most call ‘the four gospels’), In John 17, Jesus in his own statements made it clear that God, who is his father is a different person from him. He often reiterates his inferiority to God and his allegiance to the biddings of this same one true God.
John 17:3
And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.
Here, Jesus refers to the father as the only true God. He then goes ahead to mention himself, and refers to himself as one sent by the one true God. Jesus never mentions any two in one or three in one God. He strictly calls God THE ONLY TRUE GOD. Therefore, any other who claims to be God is a liar, for there is but only one true God; Yahweh our father and creator.
Jesus, as a faithful Son over God’s house taught humanity as God told him to.
John 17:8
For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me.
The scriptures do not teach that God came by himself to die for our sins. It teaches that God sent his Son Jesus to die for them.
John 17:18
As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world.
No scripture states that God came by himself to die for our sins. However, many scriptures prove that God sent his Son Jesus Christ to die for our sins.
John 17:25
“Righteous Father, the world has never known you. Yet I have known you, and these men have known that you sent me.
This was Jesus speaking. As he says clearly above, what his followers knew about him was that he was sent by God. They never saw him as God because he never claimed that. He only claimed to be God’s Son, the Messiah sent by God and prophesied about in the old testament scriptures. Sadly, many of his followers today have ignorantly refused to see him as one sent by God. They have chosen to see him as God; something neither he (Jesus) nor the scriptures teach.
Scriptures like John 17:5 are therefore taken out of context and misinterpreted to support the false trinity teaching.
John 17:5
“So now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world existed.
Some folks, after reading this scripture, run to the conclusion that Jesus is also God since he was with him from the beginning. They therefore term Jesus ‘God the Son,’ while they call his father ‘God the father.’ Scripturally, God is the father but no terms as ‘God the Son’ exists. It’s a mere fabrication of men. The above scripture doesn’t indicate that Jesus was with God from the beginning as a person. Jesus only existed with God from the beginning as God’s LOGOS (The intent of his mind, his plan, his thought, his idea).
John 1:1 explains it. The Logos was with God from the beginning. At this point, it wasn’t the man Jesus Christ. It was God’s plan. It was later on (John 1:14) when God manifested his plan as a man that he came into existence as a person. Prior to this earthly manifestation, Jesus existed from the beginning as God’s mind and plan.
1 Peter 1:20
He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was manifested in these last times for your sake.
In the last days, Jesus the Messiah was made manifest by God as a person. Before that, he was foreknown/foreordained by God to function as his first born Son and the saviour of the world. The word “foreknown” is the Greek word ‘Proginosko,’ which means to predestine or to know before time or to have knowledge before time. From the beginning, God planned the redemption of humanity via his LOGOS, the man Jesus.
God foreknew and foreordained him for this purpose. God knew he would have to suffer, die for humanity and be glorified at his resurrection.
1 Corinthians 15:42-43
So also is the resurrection of the dead. It is sown in corruption; it is raised in incorruption:
It is sown in dishonour; it is RAISED IN GLORY: it is sown in weakness; it is raised in power:
So, when Jesus was speaking in John 17:5, he knew he would die soon. That meant that his glorification was close (he knew he would resurrect after his death). His glory was to come after his sufferings.
1 Peter 1:11
Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow.
He also knew that God promised him glory from the beginning. So, at this juncture, he was praying to God, bringing to light his promise. He had to pray to God as any mortal man would, not because he doubted but because he had to communicate often with God through prayers and he did this to the hearing of his disciples, teaching them the ways of God and imbibing in them the paradigm of focusing on the eternal rewards that would be theirs at the resurrection.
