Matt Hammitt's Son Bowen Recovering From Third Open Heart Surgery

Matt Hammitt’s 9-year-old son Bowen was born with a hole in his heart (Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome) and on Wednesday, July 31st, Bowen underwent his third open heart surgery. “So grateful for all the prayers for Bowen today. The surgeons are happy with the progress. He has about two more hours in the OR, but we’re so thankful to receive our first good report today,” Matt posted on social media Wednesday around noon.

More good news came in updates later in the day as Matt posted, “Bowen is starting to open his eyes! The next 24 hours are critical, but he’s doing well. Thank you for your continued prayers.”

Bowen is now post-op day 2 and there have been continued promising updates shared on social media with videos of Bowen blowing bubbles and even walking a few steps in the hospital.

As we have been telling you about all summer long, Bowen’s tragic health struggles have not held him back from pursuing his dream of writing and recording music. Bowen, with the help of his dad, who is the former frontman of Sanctus Real, recently released a four song heart-felt EP titled Safe Right Here. In addition to featuring Matt singing with Bowen, the EP also includes guest vocals of Bart Millard and Mike Scheuchzer from MercyMe, Ben Calhoun of Citizen Way and Tim Timmons.
