IS JESUS CHRIST GOD

IS JESUS CHRIST GOD

<< READ PART 1 HERE

In the first part of this series, some foundations were laid and we came to a consensus about what a mystery is according to the Bible. The scriptures explain every doctrine the church of Christ should believe. It doesn’t hide truth from us.

2 Timothy 3:16-17
All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.

The man of God has to be perfect (be sound in his understanding of the scriptures) and thoroughly furnished. People look up to him to teach them the scriptures (How will they feel when they come to you for explanations and you say ‘it’s a mystery?’ It’s way better to ask them to give you time to study and then return with an answer).

If the scriptures do not sufficiently explain some teachings/doctrines (for instance the dogma of the trinity), it means the scriptures are not as profitable as Paul made it sound.

Fortunately, this isn’t the case. The Bible clearly teaches who Jesus Christ is (the Son of God and not God the son), who God is (the father and creator) and who the Holy Spirit is (the power/nature/active force of God).

The propounders of the trinity dogma teach that the Holy Spirit is God and Jesus Christ is God also (they are all co-equal and co-eternal). Some dramatise it by going further to say God stood and then Jesus Christ jumped out of him and the Holy Spirit jumped out of God too and they all stood there that moment, all of them being God (three in one God), equal and the same. If someone tells me this in a one-on-one conversation, I’d simply ask the person to show me the portion of the Bible where this is recorded.

The Bible is clear about what it wants us to believe about Jesus. JESUS CHRIST IS THE SON OF GOD. He’s not God the father who decided to become a mortal being. He is not ‘God the son’ (no where in the scriptures is he called this). He is the Son of God. Infact, the writings in the scriptures were/are for one reason:

John 20:31
But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, THE SON OF GOD; and that believing ye might have life through his name.

The aim of all scripture is to reconcile man to God, thus giving him immortality at the resurrection. This can only be achieved by faith in Jesus Christ the Son of God. This is why the gospel is our only message. It’s the only message of the Bible. Jesus Christ the Son of God died for our sins and resurrected on the third day to give us his righteousness. The scriptures weren’t written for you to believe that Jesus is God. It was written for you to believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.

Think about it this way. If Jesus Christ is God or if He’s God the Son, then that’s clearly a higher position than ‘Son of God.’ Being God or being God the Son is definitely higher than being the Son of God.

So, if a position such as ‘God the Son’ exists and that is what Jesus Christ is, then this is what the Bible could have told us to believe about Jesus in order to be saved. If Jesus is God or God the Son, the Bible wouldn’t tell us something less to believe in order to be saved.

What does the Bible tell us to believe about Jesus in order to be saved? This goes a very long way in determining who Jesus is. John 20:31 tells us what to believe. Let’s see a few more.

John 3:16
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten SON, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
1 John 4:10
In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent HIS SON to be the propitiation for our sins.
1 John 5:10
The one who believes in the Son of God has the testimony in himself; the one who does not believe God has made Him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has given concerning His Son.

1 Corinthians 15:1-4
1  Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;
2  By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.
3  For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
4  And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

The scriptures are crystal clear on what to believe to be saved. Believing that Jesus is God or God the Son is by no means in the list. If He was, the bible would be clear and loud on it. It could have instructed all to believe it for their salvation to be sure.

Jesus Christ is the Son of God. The first born of all creation. The saviour of the world. The mediator between God and man. The propitiation for our sin. Jesus Christ has played many roles but ‘God’ or ‘God the Son’ isn’t one of them.

How about the scriptures misinterpreted to mean that Jesus is God/God is Jesus (John 1:1 for instance)?

We will see them all in this series.

At this point, we bring part 2 to its end. See you tomorrow in our 3rd part.

There’s a lot more to talk about. Sit tight and kindly follow.

Light shines.
