IS JESUS CHRIST GOD
Often, people confuse BEING IN/WITH GOD and BEING GOD. This is often the case in times of misinterpretation of some scriptures to support the dogma of Jesus being God. Jesus was with/in God from the very beginning. This is the way in which he existed.
After Christ came as flesh, died, was raised from the dead by God and reconciled us to God, he included us in himself and in God too, since he himself is in God (we are all one by virtue of the Spirit of God we share).
Ephesians 1:13-14
In him you also, having heard the word of the truth, the Good News of your salvation—in whom, having also believed, you were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is a pledge of our inheritance, to the redemption of God’s own possession, to the praise of his glory.
Colossians 3:1-4
If then you were raised together with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated on the right hand of God.
Set your mind on the things that are above, not on the things that are on the earth.
For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.
When Christ, our life, is revealed, then you will also be revealed with him in glory.
So, we are connected to God through his Spirit made available to us by virtue of the finished works of Christ. Now, through Christ (who was in God from the beginning as his plan/thought), we are in God and God is in us.
It is pertinent to understand this just before we go on to see another scripture employed to support the teaching of Jesus being God; Micah 5:2.
Micah 5:2
But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.
In this prophecy concerning Jesus the Messiah, Micah reveals that his ‘goings forth have been from old, from everlasting.’ To most trinitarians, this describes Jesus to be God. However, it is clearly not so.
Micah 5:2 is simply implying that the origin of Jesus Christ has been from the beginning of time. Not that he’s been existing as a person from the beginning, but that from the very beginning he was with God, as John 1:1 says. He has been purposed from/by the origin (God) to manifest.
‘Forth’ in Micah 5:2 is the Hebrew word ‘motsa’ah,’ meaning the origin, the home, the source or the place from where one goes out. The verse thus says; his origin (GOD) is of old; from everlasting.
The NET (New English Translation) renders the scripture this way:
As for you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, seemingly insignificant among the clans of Judah – from you a king will emerge who will rule over Israel on my behalf, one whose origins are in the distant past.
Clearly, Micah 5:2 describes the origin of Christ. It doesn’t by any means imply that Jesus is the everlasting God who came as flesh. Instead, it explains that he was sent by God.
