IS JESUS CHRIST GOD
It is the Holy scriptures that are profitable for doctrine (2 Tim. 3:16). The above question can only be answered by the Scriptures. Does it teach God to be three in one or does it teach God to be one?
1 Tim. 2:5
There is ONE GOD. There is also ONE MEDIATOR between God and human beings—A HUMAN, the Messiah Jesus.
1 Corinthians 8:6
But to us there is but ONE GOD, THE FATHER, of whom are all things, and we in him; and ONE LORD, JESUS CHRIST, by whom are all things, and we by him.
The Roman church (the source of the Trinity teaching) says there’s one God divided into three – God the father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.
Paul says there’s one God, the Father.
Now, who do we believe? A writer of the scriptures as inspired/revealed by God OR men spurred by their own will and paradigm?
Bible writers never wrote the Bible with the existence of any trinity in mind. Instead, their writings reveal(ed) that Jesus and God are two different people; God as the father and Jesus as his Son and a mediator between God and humanity. The writer of Hebrews reveals this in very clear terms.
Hebrews 3:1
Therefore, holy brothers, partners in a heavenly calling, keep your focus on Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession.
The Bible calls Jesus our high priest in this scripture. The same is repeated in the next chapter.
Hebrews 4:14
Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has gone to heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us live our lives consistent with our confession of faith.
So, clearly, Jesus is our high priest (the middle man between humanity and God; our representative or mediator before God).
The Bible also says that no one decides by himself to become a high priest. Instead, he is appointed by some one superior (God).
Hebrews 5:4-6
No one takes this honor upon himself but he is called to it by God, just as Aaron was.
In the same way, the Messiah did not take upon himself the glory of being a high priest. No, it was God who said to him, “You are my Son. Today I have become your Father.”
As he also says in another place, “You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.”
So, clearly from the Bible, every high priest is appointed by God. None can take such honour upon himself.
Also, we see from scriptures that every high priest must be selected from amongst men (that is, must be a human, like the other humans he is to represent).
Hebrews 5:1-2
For every high priest, being taken from among men, is appointed for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins.
The high priest can deal gently with those who are ignorant and going astray, because he himself is also surrounded with weakness.
The writer of Hebrews also describes Jesus to be faithful to God and compares him to Moses.
Hebrews 3:2-6
He (Jesus) was faithful to the one who appointed him, just as Moses was in all God’s household,
because he is worthy of greater glory than Moses in the same way that the builder of a house has greater honor than the house itself.
After all, every house is built by someone, but God is the builder of everything.
Moses was faithful in all God’s household as a servant who was to testify to what would be said later,
but the Messiah was faithful as the Son in charge of God’s household, and we are his household if we hold on to our courage and the hope in which we rejoice.
Four things are worthy of notice in the above quotations from Hebrews.
1. Jesus is our high priest.
2. Every high priest is a human, just like the people he is to represent before God.
3. A person can’t decide to make himself a high priest. He must be appointed by God.
4. Jesus, as our high priest, is said to be faithful to God and is compared to Moses in a manner that places both of them to be accountable to God.
Three questions can be derived from the above points (for brethren who believe and teach that Jesus is God).
1. Since Jesus is our high priest and every high priest must be human in every way (not half human, half God or ‘very God, very man’) just like the humans he is to represent, how then is Jesus God and man at the same time? How then is he God in form of a human?
2. Since scriptures teach that no high priest makes himself a high priest but is appointed by God, how then is Jesus Christ God who decided to come to earth by himself to die for our sins? If God came as man by himself to die for our sins, that means God appointed himself as high priest instead of appointing a man. Hasn’t that faulted the scripture that says that no one takes upon himself the duty of being a high priest but is appointed by God?
3. Jesus has received greater glory than Moses since he is a better high priest than Moses. His value is eternal since he is a high priest forever (Heb. 3:2-6, 5:6). However, we see in the same bible portion that he’s compared to Moses, a mere man and is also said to be accountable and faithful to God. If Jesus is God, why should the Bible tell us he’s accountable to God? If Jesus Christ is God who decided to come as flesh, why then should bible writers suggest that they are two different people by describing Jesus to be faithful to God?
The truth remains that the Bible clearly doesn’t say that Jesus is God, but that he’s God’s Son.
The above study and many others prove so.
